The modernized standard for 35mm Slide, Negative and Photo Digitization
Do you have old 35mm family slides, negatives and photos that have made their way into your possession? Are you wondering how best to view and sort this media with minimal time investment on your part? The end game is to capture your favourite or memorable moments in a digital format that can easily be shared or posted to your social media accounts. So why not seek a modern, streamlined approach to achieving this result?
Why Sweet Spot 35 Scanning - It's all about sharing
Your media is scanned to produce a colour digital image which is then enhanced for saturation and sharpness and cleaned up of obvious dust and scratch marks. The enhancement is done manually in Photoshop in order to get the "photographer's view" of the image pre-enhancement. This process is done for each and every digital image.
Customers get two sets of digital images produced from the same scan. One set of images is
high resolution and sized for professional restoration where the intended purpose is to print the image. The size of these images is not ideal for sharing on social media.
The second set of images is created from an exact copy of the original digital scan after enhancements have been made in Photoshop. These images are then optimized in size (compressed) to suit social media platform standards for image sharing. A popular image size for most social media platforms is image width at 1080 pixels. This optimization reduces the physical dimensions of the image in pixels and the file size of the image in megabytes or kilobytes without sacrificing the quality.
We are a family-owned and operated Canadian business in Toronto, Ontario. All scanning is done by Daryl, an avid photographer with extensive experience in digitizing legacy media. He blends technical precision with a creative eye to provide quality and shareable digital media.
For us, the "sweet spot" in scanning means providing a quality, cost-effective scanning
service that delivers a finished product able to span the technological divide between friends and family members.
It's all about sharing.
We are passionate about animal welfare with a portion of all revenue generated from our scanning services going to support various animal and wildlife charities in Canada.

Process
After years of experimentation and developing alternative best practices for digitizing analog media, Daryl built his business around a production process he calls Sweet Spot 35 Scanning.
Your media is scanned using the Epson Perfection V750 Pro scanner.
We clean your media the best we can
While achieving 100% dust removal in a normal environment is extremely difficult, it is possible to get a film slide, negative or photo mostly free of visible dust using the right tools and techniques. We use a multi-step approach performed right before scanning that includes lint-free gloves, an anti-static brush and power air blower. During the scanning process of slides and negatives, we use Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement) which uses infrared light to automatically detect and digitally remove most dust and scratches in the final scan.
You can read more about the benefits of Digital Ice by following this link.
The process provides customers with two (2) sets of high‑quality digital images: one
set for Saving, Restoring and Printing and one set of optimized images best for sharing.
1. Saving, Restoring & Printing Image
This is the original full‑resolution scan. Because of its large physical size and dimensions, it is ideal for photo restoration and high‑quality printing, but generally too large for sharing. This image is scanned in the TIFF format (Tagged Image File Format). This is the best format for preserving high quality images. Customers should note that scanning images about 1200 dpi will result in more image defects being noticeable, such as dust and scratches. This is why we scan for everyday customers at 1200 dpi, the resolution we call the visual sweet spot.
2. Optimized Image
This is a smaller image optimized for sharing by compressing the originally scanned TIFF image. This image is in the JPEG format (Joint Photographic Experts Group). Images compressed to the JPEG format
maintain their image quality in a reduced file size. The resulting image is 1080 pixels in width making it an ideal size for sharing on
social media, emailing, and downloading. This is particularly beneficial when you want to share multiple images at one time.
Sweet Spot 35 Scanning does not provide photo restoration services.
Photo restoration is a specialized, time‑intensive, and often costly process. Several dedicated businesses offer this type of work, and customers who require restoration—particularly for prints intended for large‑format output—should contact one of these professional restoration providers.
Image Comparison Slider - Image Size Before and After Optimization
Moving slider to left shows a blue dot - this is the original scan of a 35mm slide at 2400 dpi. Physical size is 1.51mb and file size is 3104 x 2062 pixels.
Moving slider to right shows a green dot - this is the optimized image. The physical size is 352kb and file size is 1080 x 717 pixels.
Can you see any significant difference in image quality?

Helpful Hints:
Selecting your desired images from 35mm slides or negatives
- 35mm slides have a 36mm x 24mm image area and are contained in a 2 x 2 inch cardboard or plastic mount.
- 35mm negatives generally accompany retail developed photos in plastic sleeves or in a roll. Image frames measure 36mm x 24mm each.
Each frame counts as one image for scanning/pricing purposes.
Identify the images you want scanned
For slides and negatives, this can be done on the screen of your Android or
IOS phone or tablet using the following apps to backlight your screen in white.
- For Android, download and install the free 'White Screen' app.
- For IOS, download and install the free 'Screen Light Colour' app.
Prepare negatives for shipping if only certain image frames are to be scanned
- DO NOT CUT NEGATIVES.
- Secure the negatives to a piece of paper with a small piece of tape at each end of the negative. Only apply tape to the perforated edge of the negative.
- Use a pen to indicate which negative frame you want scanned.
- Fold paper carefully - do not fold through the negative - and include with your other media to be shipped.
Sweet Spot 35 Scanning accepts payment by major credit cards only. Customer invoices are issued by email and payment in full is due within 15 days of invoice date. After full payment is received, customers will receive a download link for their media and a customer receipt by email.
